Deepti Sharma’s Match-Winning Knock Silences Doubts About Her Batting Potential

Date:

Deepti Sharma’s Promotion Pays Off in India’s ODI Triumph Over England

In a format where explosive finishes and tactical stability often dictate outcomes, Deepti Sharma has long been viewed as an ODI mainstay due to her bowling prowess. But in India’s recent One Day International (ODI) victory against England at Southampton, it was her bat that did the talking. Promoted to No. 6—above more aggressive batters like Richa Ghosh and Amanjot Kaur—Deepti played a mature, composed, and ultimately match-winning innings of 62* off 64 balls to lead India to a thrilling four-wicket victory with 10 balls to spare.

A Bowler with the Potential of a Finisher

Deepti Sharma is already a proven match-winner with the ball. Her record—three five-wicket hauls in Women’s ODIs, the most by any Indian player—cements her legacy as a world-class bowler. However, her batting journey has been a topic of constant scrutiny. Not because she lacks technique or ability, but because of her low strike rate and cautious approach in pressure situations.

With a career ODI strike rate of 67.91 across 92 innings, Sharma’s contributions have often flown under the radar. Since the beginning of 2022, she has improved marginally with a strike rate of 77.74, ranking her 35th among 57 players who have scored at least 500 runs during that period. It’s clear that while consistency has been her strength, acceleration has been her weakness—until now.

Promotion to No. 6 Raises Eyebrows—Then Applause

When Sharma walked out to bat at No. 6 with India wobbling at 127 for 4 in the 28th over, few expected a turnaround. The required run rate was inching past six, and pressure was mounting. But alongside Jemimah Rodrigues, Sharma built a match-defining partnership of 90 runs off 86 balls that shifted the momentum in India’s favour.

Showing patience and game awareness, she scored 29 runs off her first 31 deliveries without taking any major risks. Her first boundary came only after her 32nd ball—an authoritative six over deep midwicket off Lauren Bell. By then, Deepti had already laid the foundation for a calm and calculated chase.

“I knew the calmer and more composed I was, the better our chances,” Deepti said at the post-match press conference. “The focus was on building a partnership with Jemimah, and that worked well.”

Handling Pace and Pressure: Sharma’s Strategic Mindset

One of the most critical aspects of Deepti Sharma’s innings was her ability to handle England’s fastest bowler, Lauren Filer. Known for her express pace and hostile short balls, Filer troubled India’s batters throughout her spell. Deepti, however, handled her with poise.

The turning point came when Rodrigues fell to Filer while trying to scoop a short ball that climbed unexpectedly, leaving India with 45 to get from 51 balls. But Sharma remained unfazed. She adjusted her game to counter Filer’s tactics, even surviving a scare on 53 when a top-edged pull flew to the boundary.

“We had a clear plan against her. We knew the short balls were coming and we positioned ourselves accordingly. Communication with Jemimah was key,” Sharma shared.

Clutch Finish and Team-Oriented Play

After Rodrigues’ dismissal, Deepti guided the lower middle order with authority. Richa Ghosh and Amanjot Kaur supported her in finishing the job, but the anchor role played by Sharma was the backbone of the chase. Her ability to rotate strike and pick timely boundaries ensured India never fell too far behind the rate.

Deepti credited her teammates post-match: “If Jemi hadn’t got out, we might’ve finished even earlier. Richa and Amanjot played beautifully at the end.”

India’s Winning Streak Continues in England

The victory marks India’s fourth consecutive ODI win on English soil, extending the momentum they built with a 3-0 sweep in 2022. These wins are particularly encouraging as India prepares for the Women’s ODI World Cup, which they will host starting September 30.

However, Sharma is not getting ahead of herself. “The World Cup is still far off. Right now, our focus is on one match at a time. We’ve done good things in Sri Lanka and here, and we want to keep building from that.”

Conclusion: Deepti Sharma’s Batting Revival Adds a New Dimension to India’s ODI Setup

Deepti Sharma’s unbeaten 62* was more than just a personal triumph—it was a strategic shift in India’s approach. Her ability to play the finisher’s role under pressure, against one of the strongest bowling attacks in the world, showcases her growth as a complete all-rounder. If her batting continues on this upward trajectory, Sharma could become the key to India’s success in the World Cup, not just with the ball, but with the bat too.

Her innings in Southampton wasn’t loud or flashy—but it was intelligent, composed, and exactly what India needed. And sometimes, quiet statements make the loudest impact.
