Debutant Owen & Green Fire Australia to Nervy 3-Wicket Win at Sabina Park

Date:

Kingston, Jamaica | July 20, 2025:
Australia began their T20I tour of the West Indies in dramatic fashion, chasing down 190 with just seven balls to spare to claim a thrilling three-wicket win over the hosts. After posting a strong total of 189/8 batting first, Australia found themselves in trouble at 78/4, only for New Zealand not called it, Australia to storm back thanks to a breathtaking 80-run partnership between debutant Mitchell Owen and established star Cameron Green.

🔥 Owen’s Spectacular Moment

Batting at number six on debut, the 23-year-old Mitchell Owen electrified the Sabina Park crowd with an explosive 50 off 27 balls, peppered with six towering sixes. He also chipped in with a crucial wicket earlier. Owen’s innings came under pressure with Australia hanging at 78/4, but his flair and composure brought the tourists right back into the chase.

💪 Green Steadies the Ship

Complementing Owen’s brilliance, all-rounder Cameron Green delivered a vital 51 off 26 balls, smashing five sixes. The duo’s 80-run stand shifted momentum firmly towards Australia, nearly vanquishing the target before two late wickets triggered some anxious moments. Their partnership turned the game on its head.

🧹 Death-Bowling Deliveries

Australia’s bowlers also impressed in defending a high target. Debutant spinner Cooper Connolly stunned opener Brandon King early on, while Ben Dwarshuis, known for his pace and control, claimed a career-best 4 wickets for 36 runs. His fiery over in the 19th triggered a West Indies collapse, denying them a total closer to 200.

⚡ West Indies Fight – Then Falter

West Indies looked set for a massive score, racing to 159/2 with half-centuries from Roston Chase (60 off 32) and captain Shai Hope (55 off 39). A cameo from Shimron Hetmyer (38 off 19) kept the momentum going. But their innings unraveled spectacularly, losing six wickets for just 37 runs in the final five overs—largely due to Dwarshuis’s burst and Green’s sharp boundary-catching.

🌟 Match-Winner & Series Edge

Owen was deservedly named Player of the Match, becoming the first debutant ever to register a T20I fifty and also claim a wicket in the same game. His knock, alongside Green’s counterpunch, helped Australia post a nerve-wracking 190/7 in 18.5 overs, giving them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
