Veda Krishnamurthy Bids Farewell: Indian Cricket Star Announces Retirement from All Formats

Date:

From Small-Town Beginnings to International Glory

Veda Krishnamurthy, one of India’s most passionate and fearless cricketers, has officially announced her retirement from all forms of cricket on July 25, marking the end of a remarkable journey that began in the narrow lanes of Kadur, Karnataka. Her story is one of resilience, grit, and unyielding love for the game — a story that has inspired countless young girls across India to dream big.

Veda’s retirement was announced through a heartfelt social media post, where she reminisced about her humble beginnings and her path to the grandest stages in women’s cricket. “A small-town girl with big dreams. That’s how it all started,” she wrote, capturing the emotions of her long and eventful career.

A Vital Contributor to Indian Women’s Cricket

An aggressive middle-order batter and a sharp fielder, Veda Krishnamurthy made her international debut in 2011. Over the course of her career, she represented India in 48 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 76 T20 Internationals (T20Is), leaving behind a legacy of commitment and bold cricketing spirit.

In ODIs, she scored 829 runs and claimed 3 wickets, while in the shortest format, she accumulated 875 runs. Veda’s last international appearance came during the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final against Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Her final ODI appearance was in 2018 against England.

Her career highlights include being part of two historic Indian squads — the runners-up in the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup and the 2020 T20 World Cup. The 2017 campaign, in particular, was a turning point for women’s cricket in India. The team’s stellar run drew massive public support and transformed the perception of women’s cricket in the country.

Leadership Roles and Domestic Contributions

Beyond her international contributions, Veda was a significant presence in domestic cricket. She captained Karnataka and Railways — two of India’s most competitive domestic teams. Her leadership helped nurture new talent and promote professionalism in women’s cricket at the grassroots level.

She also played a key role at the Karnataka Institute of Cricket (KIOC), where she trained during her formative years. Her affiliations with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Railways, and KIOC reflect the diverse platforms where she shaped her game and contributed to the sport’s development.

Honoring the People Behind Her Success

In her farewell note, Veda expressed deep gratitude to her family, especially her sister, for their unwavering support. “You were my first team and my constant strength,” she noted, acknowledging the sacrifices made by her loved ones to support her journey.

She also extended heartfelt thanks to her coaches, captains, teammates, and the broader cricketing fraternity — including selectors, physiotherapists, and support staff — who were instrumental in her growth. “You were never just teammates. You were family,” she wrote, reflecting the close-knit nature of her time in the Indian squad.

A Stint in Franchise Cricket

Post her international stint, Veda transitioned into the world of franchise cricket. She played in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) for the Hobart Hurricanes during the 2017-18 season, where she scored 144 runs across nine innings. More recently, she appeared for the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2024. Though she had a modest run, scoring 22 runs in four innings, her presence added experience and depth to the team.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t retained by the franchise for the 2025 season, which perhaps signaled the beginning of the end of her playing days.

A Promising Second Innings Awaits

Though Veda Krishnamurthy has hung up her boots, she is far from done with the sport. A natural communicator and insightful analyst, she has already ventured into cricket commentary and broadcasting, using her experience and voice to promote women’s cricket to a broader audience.

In her own words, “This game gave me everything. Now it’s time to give back.” She has expressed an openness to take on any role that allows her to stay connected with cricket — be it coaching, mentoring, administration, or media work. Her passion and knowledge will no doubt serve as valuable assets for the development of the sport in India.

Record Holder and Trailblazer

Among her many achievements, Veda shares the record for the highest number of catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Women’s T20 Internationals — a testament to her athleticism and fielding prowess.

She wasn’t just a batter; she was an all-round team player — someone who played with fire, energy, and an undying will to win. Her aggressive style and positive energy made her a fan favorite and a dependable middle-order anchor during critical moments.

The Legacy of Veda Krishnamurthy

Veda Krishnamurthy retires as one of the most recognizable and respected names in Indian women’s cricket. Her journey from Kadur to the MCG is symbolic of the opportunities modern Indian women have carved out for themselves in sports.

As the women’s game continues to grow with the rise of professional leagues, increasing fan support, and institutional backing, Veda’s role in shaping this ecosystem will be remembered with pride and admiration. Her journey, marked by perseverance and passion, stands as a beacon for the next generation of aspiring cricketers.

In the world of Indian women’s cricket, Veda Krishnamurthy will always be remembered not just for the runs and records, but for her fearless spirit, her leadership, and her unwavering love for the game.
