Brendan Taylor Returns to Zimbabwe Squad for Second Test Against New Zealand After Ban

Date:

Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Brendan Taylor is set for a remarkable comeback to international cricket after completing a three-and-a-half-year suspension for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code. The veteran batter, whose ban officially ended on July 25, has been named in Zimbabwe’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand, beginning August 7 in Bulawayo.

Brendan Taylor’s Road to Redemption

Taylor, now 39, expressed immense gratitude and disbelief about his return, saying, “I certainly did think it was all done, but here I am – and it’s an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. I have to pinch myself a little to realise that I’m actually here.”

Since his abrupt retirement in September 2021 and subsequent sanction, Taylor has dedicated the past 18 months to intense preparation for a comeback. His efforts included working on fitness, technical improvements, and strict dietary discipline. Taylor credits his improved physical and mental health to a commitment to sobriety, stating he now feels “leaner, fitter, and mentally stronger.”

A Warm Welcome from the Team

Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine praised Taylor’s determination, acknowledging the veteran’s relentless efforts over the past year. “I know how hard he’s worked in his individual capacity – especially over the last eight, ten [or] twelve months – in order for this to happen,” Ervine said. “I’m very excited to have him come back into the space in the next few days, and looking forward to what he has to contribute towards the team.”

Taylor’s reintegration began ahead of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand when he joined training sessions with the national side for the first time since his suspension.

Overcoming Barriers to Return

During his ban, Taylor was prohibited from training with domestic or national squads, leaving him to rely on independent facilities. He trained at an elite private school in Harare, where he quietly rebuilt his fitness and refined his batting technique. Earlier this year, Taylor revealed to ESPNcricinfo that he is in the best shape of his career after undergoing rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction.

Potential Role in the Squad

Taylor has long been one of Zimbabwe’s most consistent batters, having scored six Test centuries in 34 matches at an average of 36.25. He famously struck an unbeaten 105 in Zimbabwe’s 2011 comeback Test against Bangladesh after a six-year hiatus from the format.

With Taylor’s return, Zimbabwe’s batting order could see a reshuffle. Historically, Taylor batted at No. 4, and his inclusion might push players like Sean Williams one slot lower to strengthen the middle order. However, team management will need to balance the lineup carefully to ensure they maintain enough bowling options.

A Humbling Experience

Taylor was sanctioned for failing to report a corrupt approach involving an attempt to exploit his cocaine use. Reflecting on the incident, Taylor admitted he had been “humbled properly” and views his return as a way to serve Zimbabwe cricket. He said, “I look forward to really just adding value, which I probably didn’t do to the best of my ability when I was there before.”

Zimbabwe’s Busy Cricket Calendar

Taylor’s return comes during an intense period for Zimbabwe cricket. The team has already played seven Tests in 2025, winning only one, and faces four more this year – two each against New Zealand and Afghanistan. Between these series, Zimbabwe will also compete in the T20 World Cup Qualifiers in September.

While Taylor is unlikely to be part of Zimbabwe’s immediate T20 plans, his experience could be vital in the ODI setup, particularly as the country begins to plan for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
