Sri Lanka Clinch Series with Nissanka’s Match-Winning Century in Harare

Date:

Sri Lanka completed a 2–0 clean sweep over Zimbabwe in their ODI series after a thrilling five-wicket win in the second match at the Harare Sports Club. The victory was powered by opener Pathum Nissanka’s elegant century and a composed supporting act from Charith Asalanka, as the visitors chased down Zimbabwe’s challenging target of 278 with only three balls to spare.

Zimbabwe’s Innings – Building Towards 277

Zimbabwe, who opted to bat first, showed grit and intent throughout their innings. Their batting effort was anchored by Ben Curran, who scored a fighting 79 runs, finding boundaries consistently while holding the innings together. Captain Sikandar Raza, continuing his fine all-round form, chipped in with an unbeaten 59, ensuring Zimbabwe finished strong in the final overs.

Other contributions from the middle order gave Zimbabwe momentum, but Sri Lanka’s bowlers managed to keep things under control whenever a partnership started to flourish. Dushmantha Chameera was the standout with the ball for Sri Lanka, finishing with 3 wickets for 52 runs, breaking partnerships at crucial times.

Zimbabwe eventually ended with 277 for 7 in their 50 overs—a total that was competitive, though perhaps 15–20 runs short of what they had aimed for given their start.

Sri Lanka’s Chase – Nissanka and Asalanka Shine

Chasing 278, Sri Lanka began cautiously, knowing the pitch would offer assistance to the seamers early on. Pathum Nissanka, however, looked assured from the start, playing his trademark grounded drives and wristy flicks. He built a measured innings, rotating strike well and punishing loose deliveries.

As wickets fell around him, Nissanka held his nerve, showing maturity beyond his years. His 122 off 136 balls was a perfect blend of patience and controlled aggression. Once settled, he accelerated, finding gaps and pushing Zimbabwe’s bowlers on the back foot.

The defining partnership came when Charith Asalanka joined him, scoring a fluent 71 from 61 balls. Together, they stitched a crucial 90-run stand, which tilted the match in Sri Lanka’s favor after some nervy moments in the middle overs.

Although Zimbabwe fought back with a couple of late wickets, Sri Lanka’s lower order held their composure. The winning runs came with just three balls left, showcasing the tense finish.
