Litton Das anchors Bangladesh to a confident Asia Cup opening win over Hong Kong

Date:

Bangladesh began their Asia Cup campaign on a positive note, securing a seven-wicket victory over Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi. Though the contest was not entirely one-sided, the Tigers demonstrated superior quality in both batting and bowling, ensuring they began the tournament with two crucial points. Litton Das was the architect of the chase, crafting a composed half-century, while Towhid Hridoy offered steady support in an unbroken partnership that took the game away from Hong Kong.

A steady chase built around Litton’s fluency

Set a target of 144, Bangladesh’s innings started with signs of intent. Parvez Hossain Emon looked lively, racing to 19 off just 13 balls, including two boundaries and a six, before mistiming a slower delivery from Ayush Shukla to deep midwicket in the third over. That early dismissal did not rattle Bangladesh’s approach, but another setback followed when Tanzid Hasan fell in the sixth over, edging Ateeq Iqbal to Nizakat Khan, who completed an excellent running catch at mid-off.

At 30 for 2, Bangladesh needed stability, and that arrived through Litton and Hridoy. Their 95-run stand for the third wicket became the cornerstone of the chase. Initially, boundaries were hard to come by as Hong Kong’s spinners and medium pacers tightened the screws through the middle overs. But both batters responded smartly—rotating the strike consistently, running aggressively between the wickets, and ensuring the asking rate never crept out of control.

By the halfway stage, Bangladesh had advanced to 74 for 2, with both batters set but not yet accelerating. It was Litton who eventually broke free, launching into Shukla in the 13th over with a pair of boundaries that shifted momentum firmly towards Bangladesh. His strike rate, which had hovered near 100 for much of the innings, climbed rapidly as he reached his half-century off 33 balls. He finished with 59 off 39, decorated with seven fours and a six, before being bowled attempting one final flourish with only a couple of runs needed for victory.

Hridoy, in contrast, played the anchor’s role to perfection. His unbeaten 35 off 36 might not have had fireworks, but it was exactly what Bangladesh required. His ability to hold one end allowed Litton the freedom to play his natural attacking game, and together they ensured Hong Kong never sniffed an upset. Bangladesh crossed the line with 14 deliveries to spare, a margin that reflected both composure and professionalism.

Hong Kong’s improved batting effort

Despite defeat, Hong Kong left the game with positives to take forward. After being bundled out for just 94 against Afghanistan in their opening match, they showed far more intent and application against Bangladesh, finishing with 143 for 7. The effort was built on three notable contributions: Nizakat Khan’s 42, Zeeshan Ali’s steady 30, and a breezy 28 from skipper Yasim Murtaza.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib dented Hong Kong’s top order early with pace and movement. He dismissed Babar Hayat with a delivery that jagged in late, before removing Zeeshan with a rising ball that looped to cover. At 23 for 2, Hong Kong risked repeating their earlier collapse, but Nizakat and Zeeshan stitched together a 41-run partnership that gave their innings substance. Both played with controlled aggression, mixing singles with well-timed boundaries.

Murtaza then injected a sense of urgency with his 19-ball cameo, striking three boundaries and a six. However, his dismissal via a run-out—a result of poor communication with Nizakat—halted Hong Kong’s momentum at a critical juncture. This run-out was their 47th since the start of 2023, underlining an ongoing weakness in their running between the wickets.

Still, Hong Kong fought hard at the back end. Rishad Hossain, initially countered with sweeps and reverse-sweeps, bounced back impressively in the 19th over, dismissing Nizakat and Kinchit Shah off consecutive deliveries. Even so, Hong Kong’s lower order added useful runs, with 54 coming off the final six overs to push their total beyond 140. Against a stronger side, it was a competitive score, but Bangladesh’s superior experience proved decisive.

Bangladesh’s bowlers set the stage

While Litton and Hridoy carried the batting, Bangladesh’s win was equally shaped by their disciplined bowling effort earlier in the evening. Tanzim Hasan Sakib led the charge, clocking speeds in the early 140s and finishing with 2 for 21. Taskin Ahmed, though conceding more runs, struck at vital moments by dismissing Anshy Rath early and Aizaz Khan towards the end.

Among the spinners, Rishad Hossain stood out with a late flourish, taking 2 for 31, while Mustafizur Rahman was characteristically frugal at the death, denying Hong Kong the explosive finish they sought. Together, Bangladesh’s attack ensured Hong Kong’s innings never fully took off, leaving their batters a manageable chase.

Looking ahead

For Bangladesh, this was more than just a routine win—it was their first T20I victory in Abu Dhabi, a venue where they had previously struggled. The batting unit showed adaptability, while the bowlers combined pace and spin effectively to restrict the opposition.

Hong Kong, though winless in the Asia Cup, can draw confidence from their improved performance. They showed resilience, avoided a repeat of their collapse against Afghanistan, and kept Bangladesh honest for much of the match. Yet, their inability to sustain pressure across all phases meant they ultimately fell short.
