Champions League Round-Up: Juve’s Late Escape & More Drama Across Europe

Date:

Juventus & Borussia Dortmund Share an 8-Goal Thriller in Turin

Juventus produced one of the most dramatic moments of the Champions League season opener by clawing back from behind to force a 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

  • Dortmund took the lead multiple times, with goals coming from Karim Adeyemi, Yan Couto, Ramy Bensebaini (penalty), among others. Each time, they seemed in control.
  • But Juventus refused to give in. Dušan Vlahović scored twice—including what looked like a consolation in stoppage time—to draw level near the very end. The final equalizer came via Lloyd Kelly in stoppage time, heading in off a Vlahović setup (after a lengthy VAR review).
  • The first half was quiet, but the second half exploded with goals, momentum swings, and tension. It was one of those nights where resilience and heart mattered just as much as skill.

Vlahović was awarded Player of the Match, rightly so—he not only scored twice but played a key role in inspiring Juve’s fightback.

Other Highlights from the Matchday

  • Real Madrid vs Marseille: Despite being down to ten men late in the game (after a red card), Real Madrid found a way to win 2-1. Kylian Mbappé converted two penalties (one in each half) to overturn the deficit and seal the win.
  • Qarabağ Shakes Up Benfica: In a surprising upset, Qarabağ overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Benfica 3-2 away. After Benfica stormed into a 2-0 lead early, Qarabağ rallied through goals (including a late winner) to snatch victory.
  • Tottenham vs Villarreal: A scrappy match saw Tottenham cling to a 1-0 win, the only goal coming early. Villarreal fought back but couldn’t find the breakthrough.

What This Means Going Forward

  • For Juventus, the draw feels like a moral victory. They were down multiple times, but showed mental strength to rescue a point. However, the defensive lapses—particularly in the second half—will worry coach Igor Tudor.
  • Dortmund will rue letting a lead slip, especially late in the game. They showed quality, but also that they need composure in closing out matches.
  • Real Madrid’s win despite being a man down underscores their experience and mental toughness—champions often find ways in adversity.
  • Qarabağ’s comeback win against Benfica signals that in group stages, no team can be taken lightly.
