Heartbreak in Indore: England Win Last-Ball Thriller By 4 Runs as India’s World Cup Hangs by a Thread

Date:

Indore, October 19, 2025 – In a match that will be etched in memory for its brutal pendulum swings, the Indian Women’s team suffered a catastrophic collapse, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory to lose by a heart-wrenching 4 runs to England in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. Needing a manageable 56 from the final 53 balls with eight wickets in hand, the Women in Blue imploded spectacularly, suffering their third consecutive defeat and pushing their semifinal hopes to the brink of extinction.

The Great Collapse: A Chase Unravels

The script was written for a glorious Indian victory. Chasing a competitive 289, India was propelled by a magnificent 125-run partnership between Smriti Mandhana (88) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (70). The duo had steadied the ship after a slow start and were cruising towards the target, making the required run rate look trivial.

The turning point arrived with the dismissal of Harmanpreet Kaur, but with the in-form Smriti Mandhana still at the crease, India remained firm favourites. However, Mandhana’s departure for a well-made 88, attempting an ambitious shot off Linsey Smith, triggered a panic that engulfed the Indian batting lineup.

What followed was a period of inexplicable freeze. In the last six overs, a period demanding calm heads and calculated aggression, the Indian batters managed to hit only two boundaries. The ever-reliable Deepti Sharma fought a lone hand, scoring a valiant 50, but her dismissal in the 47th over, with 27 still needed, sealed India’s fate.

The lower order, crippled by pressure and impeccable English death bowling, failed to find the fence, culminating in a final over where India needed an impossible 9 runs off the last ball.

England’s Resilient Fightback

Credit must be given to a resilient English side that refused to surrender. After posting 288/8, a total that seemed 15-20 runs short at the innings break, their bowlers and fielders staged a remarkable heist.

The heroics were led by left-arm spinner Linsey Smith, who held her nerve to defend 12 runs in the final over under immense pressure. The English fielding was electrifying, saving crucial runs and taking sharp catches, with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt herself making a game-changing diving stop in the penultimate over.

Earlier, it was Heather Knight, playing her 300th international match, who set the platform with a sublime 108-run knock, rightly earning the Player of the Match award. Amy Jones (56) provided solid support at the top.

For India, Deepti Sharma was the standout bowler, claiming a brilliant 4/51, her best World Cup figures, to restrict England from reaching a total beyond 300.

The Aftermath: A Dressing Room of “What Ifs”

The loss leaves India’s World Cup campaign in dire straits. With only two wins from five games, their fate is no longer in their own hands. The mood in the Indian camp is one of devastation.

A distraught Captain Harmanpreet Kaur said in the post-match presentation, “The mood is definitely a bit down… we are just not able to go over the line, which is an area we need to work on. When Smriti and I were batting, it was looking good, but even after our dismissals, we still had others to do the job, but it did not go our way.”

In stark contrast, England, with this victory, have officially sealed their spot in the semifinals. Their captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt, praised her team’s execution and fighting spirit.

For millions of Indian fans, this loss is a painful echo of past chokes. The team must now win their remaining matches and rely on other results, a precarious position for a team that looked like genuine title contenders just a few games ago.
