The celebrations for India’s historic Women’s Cricket World Cup victory have taken a melodious turn, as star cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues has officially accepted cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar’s offer for a musical duet.
The charming exchange began before the high-stakes final against South Africa. During a conversation with India Today, Gavaskar had set a delightful condition for the collaboration.
The Promise
“If India win the World Cup, she and I — if she’s okay with it—will sing a song together,” Gavaskar had declared. “She’ll have her guitar, and I’ll sing along.”
On Sunday, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team delivered on their part of the bargain, securing a thrilling 52-run victory at the D.Y. Patil Stadium to claim India’s first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title.
The Acceptance
Not one to forget a promise, Jemimah Rodrigues responded in a video message shared on Instagram. With a warm smile, she directly addressed the batting legend.
“Hi Sunil Gavaskar sir, I saw your message and you said that if India win the World Cup we both will sing a song together,” Jemimah said. “So I’m ready with my guitar, hope you are ready with your mic. Lots of love, sir. Thank you for everything.”
Gavaskar’s Elation and Praise
The World Cup win itself was met with widespread jubilation, and Gavaskar was no exception. In a separate video message on his Instagram, he celebrated the landmark achievement.
“What a wonderful time it was at the D.Y. Patil Stadium yesterday… What a moment it was. It was a magnificent moment,” he expressed.
He praised the team’s resilience, highlighting their comeback after a difficult league stage. “The captain showed great character and great determination and went on to win the World Cup. It’s a moment to savour, it’s a moment to cherish, it’s a moment to remember for the ages,” Gavaskar added.
He concluded with immense pride, stating, “The entire cricketing community is very, very proud of you. Well done, congratulations.”
Now, with the trophy secured, the cricketing world eagerly awaits the next highlight: the promised musical performance between a young star of the modern game and a revered icon of the sport.
