In a dominant display at the Al Awwal Park, Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr handed Indian Super League side FC Goa a sobering 4-0 defeat in the AFC Champions League 2, solidifying their position at the top of Group D even in the continued absence of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The home side, led by a brace from winger Abdulrahman Ghareeb, showcased their superior quality and depth to outclass the Indian opponents who had put up a resilient fight in the first leg.
Ghareeb’s Brilliance Sets the Tone
Despite a bright start from FC Goa, who pressed high initially, Al Nassr gradually imposed their will on the match. The deadlock was broken in spectacular fashion in the 35th minute. Abdulrahman Ghareeb stepped up for a free-kick and unleashed a stunning curler that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar, giving goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari no chance.
Any hopes of a Goa comeback were extinguished early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Ghareeb demonstrated his poacher’s instinct, latching onto a precise through ball from Ali Al Hassan and finishing with composure to double the lead and complete his brace.
Super-Subs Seal the Commanding Win
With the result beyond doubt, Al Nassr manager Jorge Jesus turned to his star-studded bench, introducing Sadio Mané and João Félix. The move paid immediate dividends as the two combined for a goal of pure quality in the 84th minute. Mané’s deft dribble and cross from the left was met by a spectacular acrobatic volley from Félix, putting an exclamation mark on the victory.
The third goal had come earlier from Mohammed Marran, who capitalized on a defensive error from Goa’s Pol Moreni to sweep home a low cross from Nawaf Boushal.
A Reality Check for Goa
For FC Goa, the match served as a stark reality check of the level required in continental competition. While they managed their first shot on target in the 63rd minute through Dejan Drazic, they were largely outplayed and struggled to contain Al Nassr’s fluid attacking movements.
The victory ensures Al Nassr remains perfect at the top of Group D with 12 points from four games, firmly on course for the knockout stages. For FC Goa, the search for their first win in the competition continues as they remain at the bottom of the group table.
