South Africa delivered a commanding performance in Faisalabad on Thursday, thrashing Pakistan by eight wickets to level the three-match ODI series at 1-1. The Proteas’ triumph was built on a blistering bowling spell from Nandre Burger and a masterful, unbeaten century from veteran opener Quinton de Kock.
Chasing a competitive target of 270, South Africa made it look effortless, cruising home with 11 balls to spare on the back of a dominant batting display.
De Kock, De Zorzi Lay Foundation for Dominant Chase
The Proteas’ chase was anchored by a spectacular 153-run opening partnership between de Kock and Tony de Zorzi. The duo dismantled the Pakistani bowling attack, smashing a combined 11 sixes to seize control of the match from the outset.
De Zorzi, after a cautious start, blossomed to play a fluent innings of 76, providing the perfect foil for de Kock’s aggression. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who was given an early reprieve, was in sublime touch, registering his 22nd ODI century with a chanceless 123 not out. His innings ensured that South Africa never lost momentum, comfortably achieving what became the second-highest successful run chase by the Proteas against Pakistan in ODIs.
Burger’s Fiery Spell Rips Through Pakistan’s Top Order
Earlier, South Africa’s victory was set up by their pace attack, led by the fiery Nandre Burger. The left-arm quick produced a career-best spell of 4/46, single-handedly derailing Pakistan’s innings in the powerplay.
Burger removed the dangerous trio of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan within his first three overs, reducing the hosts to a precarious 38 for 3.
Despite the top-order collapse, Pakistan staged a recovery. A 92-run fourth-wicket partnership between Saim Ayub (53) and Salman Agha (69) steadied the innings. Late fireworks from Mohammad Nawaz (59) and Faheem Ashraf helped Pakistan post a respectable 269/9, adding a crucial 90 runs in the final 10 overs.
The comprehensive win not only levels the series but also demonstrates South Africa’s growing confidence in foreign conditions. The stage is now set for a thrilling series decider on Saturday, with both teams vying for the trophy.
