A missed first-half penalty from captain Morgan Gibbs-White proved decisive as a heavily-rotated Nottingham Forest side were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by SK Sturm Graz in the UEFA Europa League.
The result in Klagenfurt leaves Forest in 18th place in the league phase with five points, while their Austrian opponents remain just a point behind in 23rd.
A Night of Missed Opportunities
With injuries and suspension forcing manager Sean Dyche to make seven changes from the weekend’s draw with Manchester United, Forest nevertheless created the better chances throughout the contest.
The pivotal moment arrived 10 minutes before half-time. Emanuel Aiwu handled the ball in the box, presenting Gibbs-White with a golden opportunity to break the deadlock. However, the England international’s tame spot-kick was saved comfortably by goalkeeper Oliver Christensen, low to his left.
This was not Forest’s only let-off. Earlier, James McAtee had dragged a shot inches wide from a clever free-kick routine, and Ryan Yates saw a second-half header cleared off the line by Arjan Malić. The visitors’ frustration was compounded in the dying minutes when a powerful, deflected drive from substitute Nicolas Dominguez struck the crossbar.
Sturm Graz had a goal of their own ruled out for offside in the first half, but it was Forest who will rue their wastefulness in front of goal.
New Signings Fail to Seize Their Chance
The match represented a significant opportunity for Forest’s summer signings to impress, but several failed to deliver.
Striker Arnaud Kalimuendo, making his first start since a £26 million move from Rennes, was largely anonymous. The 23-year-old managed just seven touches in the first half and hesitated when presented with a clear sight of goal in the second.
Similarly, midfielder James McAtee, on his sixth appearance for the club, was unable to provide the creative spark, with his wayward passing—culminating in a 70% pass accuracy—summing up a disappointing evening.
The draw means Forest’s quest for a vital European win continues, with attention now turning to a crucial Premier League clash against Leeds United at the City Ground on Saturday.
