Sylhet, November 11:
After a commanding start in the first session, Ireland lost their grip on the opening day of the Sylhet Test as Bangladesh’s spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Murad turned the tide. The visitors ended the day at 270 for 8, surrendering early dominance in a hard-fought day of Test cricket.
Bright Start Turns to Collapse
Ireland began the day with confidence after opting to bat first on a slow Sylhet surface. Paul Stirling and Cade Carmichael, playing his debut Test, stitched together a 96-run second-wicket stand to put Bangladesh under pressure.
Stirling, opening for only the second time in his Test career, looked in fluent touch, bringing up a composed 60 runs, peppered with classy shots square of the wicket. Carmichael, too, impressed on debut with a gritty 59, handling the spinners with solid footwork.
However, once the partnership broke, Bangladesh struck back strongly. Ireland’s innings, which looked set for a total beyond 350, began to falter as wickets tumbled regularly through the middle and final sessions.
Bangladesh’s Spin Duo Take Charge
Offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3/50) was the chief destroyer, using flight and turn to outsmart the Irish middle order. Debutant Hasan Murad, the young left-arm spinner, showed excellent control and picked up 2/47, marking an impressive start to his Test career.
Their combined pressure in the middle overs dried up the runs, forcing Irish batters into mistakes. From a strong 96 for 1, Ireland crumbled to 184 for 4, and then to 270 for 8 by stumps — losing seven wickets in two sessions.
Pitch and Conditions
The Sylhet International Cricket Stadium surface offered gradual turn as the day progressed, suggesting it could be a spinner-friendly track as the game moves forward. Batting on the fourth innings might prove to be a major challenge, making the second day’s first session crucial for Ireland’s tail to add valuable runs.
