A composed, unbeaten half-century from skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad steered India-A to a strong position of 130/2 after 25 overs in their chase of 286, following a remarkable lower-order fightback from South Africa-A that saw them post a competitive 285/9 in the first unofficial ODI in Rajkot.
India-A’s Commanding Chase
In pursuit of 286, India-A’s innings was built on a solid foundation. Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma came out with positive intent. Sharma provided the early fireworks, smashing a quickfire 31 off just 25 balls, which included a six and four boundaries, before falling to spinner Bjorn Fortuin.
Gaikwad, however, anchored the innings beautifully. The captain brought up a run-a-ball fifty, his sixth boundary taking him to the milestone, and remained unbeaten on a well-crafted score. He found an able partner in Tilak Varma, and together they navigated a period where South Africa’s spinners slowed the scoring rate. Despite the slowdown, India-A maintained control of the chase, needing 156 from the remaining 25 overs with 8 wickets in hand.
South Africa-A’s Stunning Recovery
Earlier, the visitors’ innings was a tale of two halves. Indian pacers Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna wreaked havoc with the new ball, reducing South Africa-A to a disastrous 16/4 inside the first five overs. Arshdeep struck on the very first delivery of the match, and a mix-up led to a run-out, leaving the top order in tatters.
From the brink of collapse, a sensational 113-run partnership between Dian Forrester and Delano Potgieter resurrected the innings. Forrester played a counter-attacking knock, scoring a vital 52, while Potgieter played the anchor role.
Even after Forrester’s dismissal, the recovery continued. Potgieter, who scored a superb 88, found another reliable partner in Bjorn Fortuin. The pair added crucial runs, with Fortuin scoring a brisk 59 off 57 balls. Their efforts, particularly a late surge that saw them plunder boundaries off the Indian bowling, propelled South Africa-A to a defendable total of 285.
For India-A, the wickets were shared around, with Harshit Rana (2 wickets) bowling a brilliant final over to restrict the visitors from reaching the 300-run mark.
With Gaikwad looking set and a deep batting lineup to follow, India-A will be confident of taking a 1-0 lead, while South Africa-A will be hoping for quick wickets to expose the middle order.
