Bangladesh moved to the brink of a comprehensive victory in the first Test against Ireland, reducing the visitors to a precarious 86/5 at stumps on Day 3 after setting a daunting target of 301 runs at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Facing a trial by spin on a deteriorating pitch, Ireland’s batting lineup crumbled, leaving them needing a further 215 runs on Day 4 with only five wickets in hand.
Ireland’s Uphill Battle Turns Sour
Chasing a mammoth 301 for an unlikely win, Ireland’s second innings got off to a shaky start and never found stability. The Bangladeshi spinners, led by Taijul Islam and debutant Hasan Murad, exploited the turning track with relentless accuracy.
The collapse began when Paul Stirling, who had looked dangerous with a brisk 43, was sensationally run out after a sharp piece of fielding from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. This opened the floodgates.
Harry Tector fell LBW to Taijul Islam, and the innings unraveled completely in a single over from Hasan Murad. The left-arm spinner produced a devastating spell, trapping Lorcan Tucker LBW and then having Curtis Campher caught at cover. By the close of play, Ireland’s middle order was in tatters, with only Andy McBrine and Matthew Humphreys at the crease, tasked with a near-impossible survival mission.
Shanto’s Century Headlines Bangladesh’s Dominant Batting
Earlier, Bangladesh declared their first innings at a commanding 587/8, built on the foundation of a magnificent 171 from Mahmudul Hasan Joy and a fluent century from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Resuming the day strongly, Shanto brought up his 8th Test century, a counter-attacking 100 off 114 balls, before falling LBW shortly after reaching the milestone. He was well-supported by Litton Das, who scored a characteristically aggressive 60, and Mominul Haque, who added 82 to his overnight score.
The declaration at Tea, with a lead of 301, was a strategic masterstroke, giving their bowlers four sessions to bowl out the opposition on a pitch offering significant turn.
With only five Irish wickets remaining and a massive target still ahead, Bangladesh will be confident of wrapping up the match early on the fourth day to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.
