Leao’s Moment of Brilliance Propels AC Milan to Serie A Summit

Date:

In a season where grit has often trumped glamour, AC Milan found just enough of the latter to claim a crucial victory. A single, sublime strike from Rafael Leao on Friday night was all it took to secure a 1-0 win at Cagliari, a result that temporarily installs the Rossoneri at the summit of Serie A and extends their remarkable unbeaten league run to 16 games.

The three points, hard-fought and far from aesthetically pleasing, lift Milan to 38 points, two clear of arch-rivals Inter Milan, who have a game in hand against Bologna on Sunday. For Cagliari, a spirited performance yielded no reward, leaving them anchored in 14th place with 18 points.

The first half in Sardinia belonged to the hosts, who played with a confidence that belied their mid-table standing. They took the game to the title-chasers, pressing high and disrupting Milan’s rhythm. The visitor’s only genuine alarm came from a glancing Michel Adipo header, which was comfortably gathered by the vigilant Mike Maignan.

For Milan, the opening 45 minutes were an exercise in frustration. Laboured in possession and blunt in attack, they struggled to provide any meaningful service to their forward line. Manager Massimiliano Allegri cut an animated, exasperated figure on the touchline, his team’s performance a stark contrast to the resilient machine he has built over the past four months.

The interval brought the required reaction. Milan emerged with greater intent, and the breakthrough arrived just five minutes after the restart. A patient build-up found Adrien Rabiot in space on the left, and his driven, low cross evaded everyone in the box except for the lurking Rafael Leao. The Portuguese star took a deft touch to control, another to set himself, and with characteristic coolness, drilled a ferocious shot into the roof of the net.

The goal, a sudden explosion of quality in a match starved of it, effectively decided the contest. It sapped the energy from Cagliari’s sails, and despite their earlier endeavour, they rarely threatened to find an equalizer as Milan professionally saw out the game.

The match also offered a glimpse of the future for Milan fans, as new loan signing Niclas Fullkrug was introduced from the bench for his debut. The German striker’s arrival from West Ham United was officially confirmed on the same day, and his late cameo provided a fresh option for Allegri as the squad navigates a punishing schedule.

While the performance will not be filed under “classic Milan,” the result underscores a defining characteristic of potential champions: the ability to win while playing poorly. In a tense title race where Inter Milan remains the relentless favourite, these are the gritty, unglamorous victories that can make all the difference come May.

For now, Milan sits alone at the top, their destiny firmly in their own hands. As Allegri well knows, the path to the Scudetto is paved with nights like these—where resilience, a moment of individual magic, and three points are the only metrics that truly matter.
