Super-Subs Seal the Deal: Olmo and Lewandowski Fire Barcelona to Vital Derby Win

Date:

In a tense, chaotic, and ultimately triumphant Catalan derby, FC Barcelona needed a hero’s return from a former idol and a moment of magic from their bench to secure a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Espanyol. The result, sealed by late strikes from substitutes Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski, sends the Blaugrana seven points clear at the summit of La Liga.

The script at the RCDE Stadium was deeply personal for goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Returning to haunt his former club, the Spaniard was the target of relentless hostility from the home fans, but he channeled it into a world-class performance. His first-half heroics were breathtaking, most notably an unbelievable, fingertip save to deny Roberto Fernandez’s goal-bound header, preserving a fragile parity and proving his worth as Barcelona’s last line of defence.

For long periods, however, Barcelona’s attack faltered. The frenetic derby pace exposed a glaring off-night for Marcus Rashford, whose poor touch and wayward passing saw him mercifully substituted at halftime after a performance rated a dismal 4/10. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha struggled to impose themselves, while Ferran Torres was isolated against a compact and determined Espanyol defence.

With the game in the balance, manager Hansi Flick played his decisive hand. A triple substitution just after the hour mark changed the game’s destiny. On came Robert Lewandowski, Dani Olmo, and the energetic Fermin Lopez.

The breakthrough arrived with just four minutes of normal time remaining. Fermin Lopez, a dynamic presence since entering the fray, received the ball under pressure, turned brilliantly to create space, and slipped a perfect pass to Dani Olmo. The midfielder took a touch and unleashed a sublime, curling shot that nestled into the top corner, leaving the Espanyol keeper with no chance.

As the hosts pushed for a desperate equalizer, Barcelona struck again on the counter in stoppage time. Once more, Lopez was involved, driving forward before laying off to Robert Lewandowski. The veteran striker showcased his timeless composure, delicately chipping the ball over an onrushing defender to seal the three points and send the travelling fans into raptures.

While the substitutes grabbed the headlines, the defensive foundation was rock-solid. Pau Cubarsi (8/10) was immense, putting his body on the line repeatedly, while Jules Kounde (7/10) provided calm and coverage across the backline.

The match was a tale of two halves and a testament to squad depth. For Espanyol, it was a story of heroic resistance undone by moments of sheer quality. For Barcelona, it was a gritty, unglamorous, but ultimately crucial victory—the kind that defines title-winning seasons. Hansi Flick’s tactical changes were a masterstroke, turning frustration into triumph and leveraging the power of a world-class bench to open a significant gap at the top of the table.
