Missed Chances Haunt City as Title Hopes Fade in Frustrating Brighton Draw

Date:

Manchester City’s grip on the Premier League trophy loosened significantly on a tense and wasteful night at the Etihad, as a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion extended their winless run to three games. The result leaves Pep Guardiola’s side adrift in the title race, forced to rue a litany of missed chances, most notably from star striker Erling Haaland.

From the outset, the pattern was familiar: City dominance in possession, Brighton’s disciplined low block, and growing frustration in the stands. The breakthrough seemed to arrive in the 36th minute, courtesy of the ever-dangerous Jeremy Doku. The Belgian winger, a rare bright spark, danced into the box and won a penalty, which Erling Haaland dispatched coolly to end his mini-goal drought and score a historic 35,000th Premier League goal.

Yet, the lead felt fragile. City squandered a golden opportunity to double it before halftime, with Bernardo Silva failing to pick out Haaland in a promising position. That profligacy proved costly. Just after the hour mark, Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma found a sliver of space on the edge of the box and curled a sublime, unstoppable finish into the far corner, silencing the Etihad.

What followed was a frantic, one-sided siege. City piled forward, creating chance after chance, but a combination of resolute Brighton defending and poor finishing left them empty-handed. The defining moment came late when substitute Rayan Cherki delivered a perfect cut-back to Haaland, only for the Norwegian to shoot straight at the goalkeeper from close range—a miss that encapsulated City’s evening.

While the attack misfired, City’s patched-up defence, missing several key starters, held reasonably firm, with young defender Abdukodir Khusanov earning plaudits for a solid performance. However, the midfield lacked its usual incision. Phil Foden was anonymous before being substituted, registering a concerning 4/10 performance, and the team struggled to break down Brighton’s deep-lying structure despite Guardiola’s tactical adjustments and substitutions.

For Pep Guardiola, the draw raises difficult questions. His rotation and tactical tinkering, perhaps with one eye on other competitions, failed to yield the necessary victory. The team’s inability to kill off games—a recurring theme in this three-game drawing streak—has handed the initiative firmly to Arsenal at the summit.

The message from the Etihad was stark. A title race that City have so often controlled with relentless, machine-like efficiency is now slipping away, not through a lack of chances, but through a sudden and critical failure to take them. With each passing draw, the mountain to reclaim the trophy grows steeper, and the echoes of missed opportunities grow louder.
