Tactical Gambit or Necessity? Explaining Washington Sundar’s Lower-Order Batting in Tense Chase

Date:

India’s tense four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI in Vadodara featured a notable and ultimately crucial tactical deviation: all-rounder Washington Sundar, typically slated to bat at No. 7, did not emerge at his usual position. Instead, fast bowler Harshit Rana (29 off 23 balls) was promoted ahead of him, a move that raised eyebrows but was later revealed to be a calculated decision driven by an on-field injury.

The pivotal moment arrived in the 28th over when New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson delivered a devastating spell, dismissing Virat Kohli (93), Ravindra Jadeja, and Shreyas Iyer (49) in quick succession. With India’s well-set chase suddenly wobbling at 184/5, logic dictated the arrival of the established all-rounder, Sundar.

However, it was the debutant Harshit Rana who walked out to bat at No. 7. The move proved to be a masterstroke. Rana played a fearless, counter-attacking innings, striking three fours and a six. His 23-ball 29 provided vital momentum and crucial support to KL Rahul, easing the pressure in a high-stakes phase of the chase.

The reason for Sundar’s delayed entry became clear as he eventually came in at No. 8. The all-rounder had suffered a side strain injury while bowling earlier in the day. He had left the field in the 20th over of New Zealand’s innings, clutching his back, and could only complete five overs. This physical limitation forced the Indian think tank, led by captain Shubman Gill, to reshuffle the batting order protectively.

Sundar, visibly in discomfort, struggled during his 7-run stay but showcased immense grit. His primary job was to stay at the crease and support the in-form KL Rahul, a task he accomplished despite clear physical distress. His nine-ball vigil, filled with three scrambled singles, was a testament to his determination and played a silent, yet significant, role in the victory.

While no official update has been provided by the BCCI, reports confirming a side strain explain the team’s cautious approach. The decision to shield an injured player and instead promote a capable lower-order hitter like Rana highlighted flexible thinking under pressure. It was a gamble that paid off handsomely, with Rana’s cameo changing the tempo and Sundar’s resilience seeing the team over the line, turning a potential selection puzzle into a story of smart management and collective resolve.
