Abhishek Sharma Shatters World Record to Become Fastest to 1000 T20I Runs

Date:

Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has etched his name into the history books, becoming the fastest batter in the world to score 1,000 runs in T20 Internationals in terms of balls faced.

The left-handed dynamo achieved the monumental feat during the fifth T20I against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, showcasing the explosive talent that has made him a mainstay at the top of the Indian order.

Dethroning a Global Star

Abhishek shattered the previous global record held by Australia’s power-hitter Tim David. David had reached the milestone in 569 balls for Australia during his knock in Hobart just days earlier. In a stunning display of consistency and power, Abhishek surpassed this mark, requiring fewer deliveries to enter the elite club.

The record for the fastest to 1,000 T20I runs (by balls faced) now stands as:

  1. Abhishek Sharma (India) – Fewer than 569 balls
  2. Tim David (Australia) – 569 balls
  3. Suryakumar Yadav (India) – 573 balls

When considering all balls faced in T20Is for any nation, David’s total rises to 614, placing him sixth on the overall list, which includes his runs for Singapore.

Fastest Indian by Matches, Second-Fastest by Innings

Beyond the balls-faced record, Abhishek also cemented his place among India’s T20I greats. He is now the fastest Indian to reach 1,000 runs in terms of matches played, achieving the landmark in his 28th innings.

He narrowly missed dethroning Virat Kohli’s record for the fewest innings, falling just one innings short of the legend’s mark of 27.

Fewest innings to 1,000 T20I runs for India:

  • 27 – Virat Kohli
  • 28 – Abhishek Sharma
  • 29 – KL Rahul
  • 31 – Suryakumar Yadav

The global record for the fewest matches is jointly held by England’s Dawid Malan and the Czech Republic’s Sabawoon Davizi, who both reached the mark in their 24th match.

Despite being dropped twice early in his innings at the Gabba, Abhishek’s composure to not only play a impactful knock but also secure a place in history underscores his immense potential and marks the arrival of a new, record-breaking star in the Indian batting lineup.
