Barcelona Defends Spanish Super Cup in Thrilling El Clásico Final

Date:

In a pulsating, chaotic, and dramatic El Clásico final, Barcelona successfully defended its Spanish Super Cup title, edging out a resilient Real Madrid 3-2 at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. The victory, secured by a Raphinha brace and a vintage Robert Lewandowski finish, was a testament to the Catalans’ composure despite a late red card and relentless Real Madrid pressure.

The final, a rematch of last year’s 5-2 Barcelona rout, lived up to its billing from the outset. Barcelona controlled the early possession, but it was a moment of transition that produced the opener. In the 36th minute, a quick turnover saw Fermin Lopez thread a perfect through ball to Raphinha, who drilled a low shot through Tchouaméni’s legs to give the Blaugrana a deserved lead.

Real Madrid, however, refused to be overawed. On the stroke of halftime, they produced a moment of individual brilliance. Vinicius Jr., picking up the ball on the left, danced past Jules Kounde and Pau Cubarsi before finishing coolly to send the teams into the break level.

The second half began with a breathtaking flurry. Just minutes after the restart, Pedri unlocked the Madrid defense with a sublime pass for Robert Lewandowski, who deftly chipped the advancing Thibaut Courtois to restore Barcelona’s lead. But the drama was immediate. From the ensuing kick-off, Real won a corner, and after a goalmouth scramble that saw Raphinha clear a header onto his own crossbar, young striker Gonzalo García pounced to tap in the rebound, making it 2-2.

With the game hanging in the balance, Raphinha stepped up once more to be the hero. In the 73rd minute, after a Dani Olmo pass was missed in the box, the Brazilian collected the ball, took a touch, and unleashed a right-footed shot that took a decisive deflection off Marcos Asensio, looping over a stranded Courtois.

The closing stages were fraught with tension. Barcelona was reduced to ten men in the 90th minute when Frenkie de Jong was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on substitute Kylian Mbappe. Real Madrid laid siege to the Barcelona goal in eight minutes of stoppage time, but a combination of desperate defending, poor finishing, and the safe hands of goalkeeper Joan Garcia saw the Catalans over the line.

The victory secures a record-extending 16th Spanish Super Cup for Barcelona and delivers the second trophy of the Hansi Flick era. For Real Madrid and manager Xabi Alonso, it was a night of missed opportunities and defensive lapses that leaves their season at a crossroads, with the future of their coach now under intense scrutiny after failing to deliver silverware.
