Bayern Stroll Past Lyon 2–1 in First Pre‑Season Friendly of 2025/26

Date:

Bayern Munich kicked off their pre-season with a solid 2‑1 victory over Olympique Lyon at the Allianz Arena. The game remained goalless until the second half, but quickly came to life thanks to an inspired double from new signing Michael Olise, backed by an eye‑catching debut from fellow newcomer Luis Díaz.

⚽ First Half: Teething Trouble

The opening half offered little in terms of goalmouth action. Bayern fielded a mix of veterans (Kane, Goretzka, Upamecano) and youth prospects (Wanner, Karl, Bischof). Lyon looked organised but cautious. Both sides struggled to break through—efforts from Kane and Coman went begging, while Lyon’s Mikautadze had Lyon’s best chance, which brushed the post.

At halftime it remained 0‑0 — both sides still shaking out preseason rust.

💥 Second Half: Díaz Lights the Spark

The second half saw a full squad rotation, with Luis Díaz, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, and others entering. Díaz, making his debut just days after moving from Liverpool, injected instant energy: within minutes, he darted down the wing to test Lyon’s keeper, then won a penalty when Clinton Mata clipped him in the box.

  • Michael Olise stepped up to slot home the resulting penalty in the 53rd minute.
  • Soon after, he gleefully doubled Bayern’s lead with a well‑timed shot from a Serge Gnabry assist in the 62nd minute—from just inside the box.

Díaz continued to sparkle, creating several chances, keeping defenders on their toes, and combining well with Gnabry and Olise.

⏱️ Late Drama: Lyon Fight Back

Lyon refused to go quietly. Teenager Alejandro Gomes Rodríguez pulled one back in stoppage time with a well‑placed shot into the top corner, after capitalising on a rare lapse in concentration from Olise. Lyon pressed in added time, but Bayern’s defence held firm to see out the win.

🌟 Debutants & Breakouts

  • Luis Díaz, in limited minutes, was lively and direct. He helped win Bayern’s first-half penalty and looked comfortable alongside players like Gnabry and Kusi‑Asare.
  • Paul Wanner, returning from loan, impressed off the bench—suggesting a strong case to stay at Bayern this coming season instead of another loan spell.
  • Youth players Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof also caught the eye with bright interventions, further demonstrating Bayern’s commitment to integrating young talent.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised Díaz for impacting the game immediately, calling him full of energy and a perfect fit.
