Blues Return to Winning Ways with Convincing Display

Date:

Chelsea ended a five-match winless run in all competitions with a controlled 2-0 victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and the outstanding Malo Gusto. The win provides a significant boost for manager Mauricio Pochettino and lifts the mood in West London.

The Blues, showing more aggression and cohesion than in recent weeks, took a deserved lead in the 21st minute. Malo Gusto, a constant threat from right-back, drove forward and slipped a perfect pass into Cole Palmer. The England international, starting for the first time after a lengthy injury layoff, finished coolly past Jordan Pickford for his first goal since September.

Chelsea doubled their lead just before halftime with a well-worked team goal. A swift counter-attack saw the ball shifted to Raheem Sterling on the left. His low cross was met by the late-arriving Malo Gusto, who swept home from close range to cap a magnificent first-half performance.

Everton offered little threat, with Chelsea’s centre-back pairing of Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill comfortably dealing with any sporadic attacks. The visitors’ best chance fell to substitute Beto, whose late header struck the post, but it was too little, too late as Chelsea saw out the game to secure a vital clean sheet and three points.

Player of the Match: Malo Gusto

The French full-back was simply sensational. He provided the assist for Palmer’s opener with a penetrative run and pass, then showcased his attacking instincts to get on the scoresheet himself. Defensively sound and offensively explosive, he was the game’s dominant figure.

Chelsea Player Ratings

  • Đorđe Petrović (7/10): A quiet afternoon, but alert when called upon. Commanded his box well for crosses.
  • Malo Gusto (9/10): STAR PLAYER. A complete performance. Instrumental in both goals and a relentless force on the right flank.
  • Axel Disasi (7/10): Strong and composed at the back. Formed a solid partnership with Colwill.
  • Levi Colwill (7/10): Read the game superbly and used the ball intelligently from defence.
  • Marc Cucurella (7/10): Energetic and secure on the left, providing balance to Gusto’s advances on the opposite side.
  • Moisés Caicedo (7/10): Provided the defensive platform, breaking up play and distributing simply.
  • Conor Gallagher (7/10): Full of running and intensity. Pressed relentlessly and linked midfield and attack.
  • Cole Palmer (8/10): Impact Return. Took his goal with typical composure and was a constant creative threat before his planned substitution.
  • Noni Madueke (6/10): Lively and direct, but his final decision-making was occasionally off.
  • Raheem Sterling (7/10): Provided the assist for Gusto’s goal with a perfect cross. A persistent danger to the Everton defence.
  • Nicolas Jackson (6/10): Worked hard and held the ball up well but lacked a clear scoring chance.

Substitutes: *Carney Chukwuemeka (6/10), Armando Broja (6/10), Lesley Ugochukwu (N/A).*

Manager – Mauricio Pochettino (7/10): Got his team selection and tactics spot on. His decision to reintroduce Palmer paid immediate dividends, and his team played with a clear identity and control that has been missing.

Key Talking Points

  • Palmer’s Return: The team’s chief creator is back and on the scoresheet, which is a major boost for Chelsea’s attack.
  • Gusto’s Emergence: Establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting full-backs.
  • Defensive Solidity: A rare and welcome clean sheet, offering a foundation to build upon.

What This Result Means

The victory moves Chelsea into the top half of the table, easing recent pressure. Everton, meanwhile, continue to struggle for consistency and goals away from home.

Next for Chelsea: A midweek Carabao Cup fixture against Blackburn Rovers, followed by a Premier League trip to face Tottenham Hotspur.
