Diogo Jota Honoured as Liverpool Make Emotional Return to the Pitch

Date:

Football reminded the world once again why it is more than just a game as Liverpool FC returned to action for the first time since the tragic death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota. In an emotional pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Sunday, the Reds and thousands of travelling fans came together to pay tribute to the player who was loved for his passion, commitment, and humble spirit.

Before kick-off at Deepdale stadium, the iconic Liverpool anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” rang out, uniting both sets of supporters in a moment of reflection. Preston captain Ben Whiteman walked solemnly to the away end and laid a wreath in front of the Liverpool fans, an act of solidarity that drew warm applause.

A minute’s silence followed — broken only by the gentle ripple of scarves being held high. Both Liverpool and Preston players wore black armbands, a mark of respect for the man whose sudden passing has left the football world in shock.

Diogo Jota, only 28, was killed along with his brother Andre Silva on July 3 when their car veered off a road in northern Spain and caught fire. Just 11 days before the accident, Jota had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three young children.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot spoke with raw honesty ahead of the match. “What I take comfort in is that in the last month of his life, he was a champion in everything,” Slot said. “A champion for his family because he got married. A champion for his country after lifting the Nations League. And a champion for us by helping us win the Premier League.”

The tributes didn’t end there. Before a ball was kicked, Liverpool fans sang Jota’s song at full volume — declaring him “better than Figo”, in a nod to Portugal’s legendary winger Luís Figo. Flags across the stands read “Forever our number 20”, acknowledging Liverpool’s decision to retire Jota’s shirt number as a permanent tribute.

The atmosphere inside Deepdale was heavy with grief but also with pride — pride in a player who gave everything for club and country, and whose warm personality won the respect of teammates and supporters alike. Mohamed Salah wore the captain’s armband in Jota’s absence, leading a line-up that included several first-team stars, while senior players like Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson stood with fans off the pitch to show their support.

Earlier in the week, Slot and his wife, alongside Liverpool players, visited Anfield to pay their respects at the growing sea of flowers, scarves, and handwritten messages left for Jota and his brother. “Nothing seems important when we think of what has happened,” Slot said. “We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go.”

Sunday’s tribute reminded football fans worldwide — including millions in India who follow Liverpool passionately — that the sport’s greatest legacy is not silverware alone but the memories and moments that bind families, players, and supporters together. Diogo Jota may be gone far too soon, but his place in Liverpool’s story — and in the hearts of Reds everywhere — will never be forgotten.
