Djokovic Advances in Athens, Then Breaks Down in Emotional Tribute to Late ‘Tennis Father’

Date:

Novak Djokovic secured a methodical 7-6(3), 6-1 victory over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hellenic Championship in Athens on Thursday, but the night will be remembered for the raw emotion that followed the match, as the tennis legend broke down during a tribute to his late coach, Nikola Pilic.

The win itself was a professional performance. After navigating a tight first set decided by a tiebreaker, Djokovic dismantled Tabilo in the second with clinical precision, sealing the match in just over 90 minutes.

“I’m thrilled to get through tonight,” Djokovic told the crowd afterward. “I played against Tabilo and I’ve never won against him, so I was more under tension before the match than I would be before some others.”

However, the competitive tension of the match was quickly replaced by a wave of emotion. As the lights dimmed in the stadium, a tribute video played in honor of Pilic, the Croatian coach who discovered a 12-year-old Djokovic and became a foundational figure in his life and career. Pilic passed away in September at the age of 86.

Watching the montage, Djokovic’s composure cracked, moving the audience as tears welled in his eyes.

The moment turned what was a routine victory into a poignant homecoming for the 38-year-old, who recently moved to Athens with his family.

“It feels really like home playing in Athens,” he had said earlier, expressing his connection to the Greek capital. “More than recognition for my tennis achievements, I felt that people here approached me in a friendly and humane way, and that touched my heart.”

But his deepest gratitude was reserved for the man he once called his “tennis father.” In past eulogies, Djokovic has credited Pilic for playing a “fundamental, integral role in my development,” a debt of gratitude that was palpably felt on a night dedicated to sport, but ultimately defined by memory and loss.
