Halambage Earns Maiden Call-Up as Sri Lanka Look Ahead with Fresh Faces for Zimbabwe T20Is

Date:

Sri Lanka have announced a reshaped squad for their upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, signalling a clear intent to build for the future. The most notable inclusion is that of 20-year-old batter Vishen Halambage, who has been handed his first call-up to the senior side following a string of promising performances at the domestic level.

The selectors have made five changes from the group that recently toured Bangladesh. Alongside Halambage, Nuwanidu Fernando and Kamil Mishara return to the fold as specialist batters, while Dushan Hemantha comes in as an allrounder and Dushmantha Chameera strengthens the fast-bowling unit. Making way are experienced campaigners Avishka Fernando and Dinesh Chandimal, legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay, young seamer Eshan Malinga, and star allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who has been sidelined by injury.

A Youth-Driven Approach

Halambage, Nuwanidu, and Mishara were all standout performers in the recent SLC T20 League, a three-team invitational competition aimed at helping selectors identify talent ahead of the Asia Cup and Zimbabwe tour. The trio’s inclusion underscores Sri Lanka’s renewed focus on modern, aggressive batting — a strategy that has become central to T20 cricket globally.

Both Halambage and Mishara showcased their power-hitting ability, finishing with a tournament-high tally of six sixes each. They joined the likes of established internationals Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa at the top of that list. Mishara in particular impressed with his strike rate of 172.72, second only to Nissanka’s remarkable 190.24. He also struck 19 boundaries, the second-most in the tournament behind only Niroshan Dickwella’s 20. Halambage was not far behind, operating at a strike rate of 140.32, displaying his ability to rotate strike while also clearing the ropes when required.

Nuwanidu Fernando, meanwhile, stood out for his consistency. Though his strike rate of 124 was more modest compared to the others, he finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 155 runs in four innings. His two unbeaten knocks boosted his average to a remarkable 77.50, underlining his reliability in the middle order. With the No. 4 position now vacant following the omissions of Avishka Fernando and Chandimal, Nuwanidu has emerged as a prime contender for the role, supported by his steady performances for Sri Lanka A and across domestic competitions.

Dickwella Misses Out

One player who may feel hard done by is Niroshan Dickwella. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter scored 134 runs at a strike rate of 161.44 in the SLC T20 League, including two half-centuries. However, with Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka firmly established at the top of the order, Dickwella’s pathway back into the national T20I side seems blocked. The selectors appear to be prioritising long-term planning, favouring younger players with a higher ceiling for development.

Bowling Department Shake-Up

On the bowling side, the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga due to injury has opened a spot that has been filled by Dushan Hemantha. While Vijayakanth Viyaskanth may have been the more impressive legspinner statistically, Hemantha’s all-round contributions and superior fielding tipped the balance in his favour. He picked up four wickets in the domestic tournament and showed his ability to contribute with the bat as well, making him a valuable multi-dimensional option.

The exclusion of Jeffrey Vandersay appears more decisive, as he wasn’t even part of the SLC T20 League setup, hinting that the selectors no longer view him as part of their future T20I plans.

In the pace attack, competition for places remains fierce. Eshan Malinga, despite a strong showing in the IPL earlier this year, failed to impress in recent domestic outings. He took four wickets in the SLC T20 League, but all came in a single match, and he struggled badly in the others, conceding runs at an economy of 11.71 — the worst in the tournament. In contrast, Chameera returned with tighter figures, conceding at 8.5 an over, while Chamika Karunaratne was the standout with eight wickets at a miserly economy of 5.5. These performances effectively shut the door on Malinga, at least for the time being.

Asalanka Leads a Balanced Squad

The squad will be captained by Charith Asalanka, who continues to grow in his leadership role. The team also features experienced names such as Kusal Perera, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, and Dasun Shanaka, providing a mix of youth and experience.

Sri Lanka will begin their campaign with two ODIs against Zimbabwe over the weekend, followed by the T20I series in Harare starting September 3. With several fresh faces and a clear strategy to modernise their batting and balance their attack, this series could mark the beginning of a new phase in Sri Lanka’s T20I journey.
