IPL 2025: Riyan Parag to Lead Rajasthan Royals in Initial Matches, Sanju Samson to Play as Batter

Date:

Sanju Samson’s Injury Update and Role in IPL 2025

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have officially named Riyan Parag as their stand-in captain for the first three matches of IPL 2025. Regular skipper Sanju Samson, who is recovering from a finger injury sustained earlier this year, will participate as a batter until he is fully fit to resume wicketkeeping and fielding duties.

Samson suffered a finger injury during India’s T20I series against England in February when he was struck by a delivery from Jofra Archer. Following surgery last month, he completed rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and rejoined the RR squad on Monday. Given that he is yet to receive clearance for wicketkeeping, RR has identified Dhruv Jurel as an alternative option behind the stumps. Jurel had previously stepped in for Samson in the fifth T20I against England when Samson was ruled out due to the injury.

Despite being unable to take on his full role, Samson remains a crucial part of the playing XI and is expected to feature as an Impact Player during RR’s initial matches. The franchise has confirmed that he will reassume captaincy duties once he is completely fit.

Samson Expresses Confidence in Parag’s Leadership

In a video shared by RR’s official Instagram handle, Samson acknowledged his temporary unavailability and expressed confidence in Parag’s leadership skills.

“I am not completely fit for three or more games. However, we have many strong leaders within this squad. Over the past few years, the team environment has been well-managed by great individuals. For these three games, Riyan will lead the team. He is more than capable, and I expect everyone to support him,” said Samson.

Riyan Parag’s Captaincy Debut in IPL

Riyan Parag’s appointment as captain marks a historic moment in his IPL career. The 22-year-old all-rounder becomes the fifth-youngest captain in IPL history. Having been part of RR since 2019, Parag has grown into a vital player for the franchise. His stellar performance in IPL 2024 saw him amass 573 runs—the highest for Rajasthan Royals and the third-highest overall in the tournament. His consistent performances also earned him debuts in both T20I and ODI formats for India.

Parag’s leadership credentials are well-established in domestic cricket, where he has captained Assam with notable success. RR’s decision to hand him the captaincy underscores their belief in his leadership qualities and ability to guide the team effectively during the initial phase of the season.

Franchise’s Statement on Parag’s Captaincy

In an official statement, Rajasthan Royals explained the rationale behind appointing Parag as the interim captain.

“The decision to entrust Riyan with the captaincy highlights the franchise’s confidence in his leadership qualities, which he has showcased while leading Assam in domestic cricket. His deep understanding of the Royals’ setup makes him a strong choice to guide the team during the opening phase of IPL 2025,” the statement read.

Parag’s Leadership Experience and Upcoming Fixtures

Parag’s captaincy experience extends beyond the IPL. Between 2021 and 2023, he led Assam in 17 T20 matches, winning 10 of them. During this period, he maintained a staggering batting average of 67.09 and an explosive strike rate of 167.72, further solidifying his credentials as a dynamic leader. His aggressive approach with the bat and tactical acumen on the field make him an exciting prospect as an IPL captain.

Parag will take charge for RR’s opening fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23. The team will then play two home matches in Guwahati—first against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26, followed by a clash against Chennai Super Kings on March 30. These matches will be crucial for RR’s campaign as they aim to establish a strong start in IPL 2025.

Impact of Captaincy Change on Rajasthan Royals

The temporary shift in leadership presents both challenges and opportunities for Rajasthan Royals. While Samson’s absence in a full-capacity role may pose initial concerns, the team boasts a strong lineup that can support Parag’s leadership. Senior players such as Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Trent Boult will be instrumental in guiding the young captain through this transitional phase.

Parag’s aggressive playing style and ability to handle pressure make him a promising leader. His experience in handling high-stakes situations in domestic cricket will be tested at the grand stage of the IPL. Fans and analysts alike will closely watch how he strategizes and motivates the team against formidable opponents.

What This Means for Rajasthan Royals’ Title Hopes

With a well-balanced squad and a mix of youth and experience, Rajasthan Royals remain strong contenders for the IPL 2025 title. The team’s performance in the initial games under Parag’s leadership could set the tone for the rest of the tournament. Additionally, Samson’s return as full-time captain will further strengthen RR’s campaign as the season progresses.

As IPL 2025 kicks off, all eyes will be on Parag’s captaincy debut and Samson’s recovery. If Parag can lead RR to a strong start, it will not only boost the team’s morale but also cement his reputation as a future leader in Indian cricket. The upcoming fixtures promise thrilling action as Rajasthan Royals aim for a successful campaign under their young stand-in captain.
