Ireland produced a stunning all-round performance to secure a commanding 39-run victory over Bangladesh in the first T20 International in Chattogram, emphatically bouncing back from their recent Test series defeat.
After being asked to bat first, a strong Irish batting lineup posted a competitive 181-4, before their bowlers, led by the spin of Matthew Humphreys, tore through the Bangladeshi order to restrict the hosts to 142-9.
Harry Tector Anchors a Strong Irish Total
The foundation of Ireland’s win was built with the bat. After a solid start, the Tector brothers steadied the innings, with Harry Tector playing a match-defining knock.
The middle-order batsman was in sublime touch, finishing unbeaten on 69 from just 53 balls. He expertly guided the innings through the middle overs before accelerating late, with support from George Dockrell, to push Ireland to a challenging total on a tricky surface.
Humphreys & McCarthy Decimate Bangladesh’s Chase
Any hopes of a comfortable Bangladeshi chase were extinguished within the powerplay itself. Ireland’s bowlers came out with relentless intensity.
- Mark Adair struck twice in his opening spell.
- Barry McCarthy (3-23) provided crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs.
However, the star with the ball was 21-year-old spinner Matthew Humphreys. The left-arm orthodox bowler wreaked havoc, claiming a magnificent 4 for 13 from his four overs. He ripped through the top order and never allowed the Bangladeshi batsmen to settle, earning the Player of the Match award.
Despite a fighting, lone-handed 83 from Towhid Hridoy, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals and never recovered from the early collapse, falling well short of the target.
A Statement of Intent from a Full-Strength Side
Irish captain Paul Stirling highlighted the significance of having a full-strength squad available. “That’s as close to full strength as we’ve had in a long time in the T20,” he said. “We welcomed back some senior figures and it showed. We turned up really well today.”
The victory gives Ireland a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second T20I scheduled for Saturday. The win not only levels the tour but sends a powerful message about Ireland’s capabilities in the white-ball format.
