Jewel in the Crown: Benzema Strikes as Ittihad Edge Riyadh in Jeddah Thriller

Date:

The dazzling King Abdullah Sports City Stadium—affectionately known as ‘The Jewel’—lived up to its name on Thursday, providing a spectacular backdrop for a Saudi Pro League thriller where Al Ittihad secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a resilient Al Riyadh.

In front of a passionate home crowd in Jeddah, the Tigers seized control of the match early on, thanks to their marquee striker.

Ittihad’s Early Dominance Pays Off

The home side looked comfortable from the start in their gleaming fortress. The breakthrough came in the 24th minute, when French superstar Karim Benzema demonstrated his timeless class with a clinical finish to put Ittihad ahead.

Just before halftime, the home fans had more to celebrate. The lead was doubled in the 42nd minute when Al Khaibari found the net, sending Ittihad into the break with a commanding 2-0 advantage.

A Nervy Finish as Riyadh Fights Back

Despite Ittihad’s control, Al Riyadh refused to be overawed by the occasion or the illustrious venue. They launched a spirited fightback in the second half and found a crucial lifeline in the 77th minute through a well-taken goal from Sylla.

The goal set up a tense finale, but Al Ittihad’s defense held firm under pressure, managing the game effectively to see out the remaining minutes and secure three vital points.

The victory ensures that ‘The Jewel’ remains a happy hunting ground for the Tigers, who continue their campaign in the Saudi Pro League with momentum on their side.

*Final Score: Al Ittihad 2 (Benzema 24′, Al Khaibari 42′) – 1 Al Riyadh (Sylla 77′)*
