Jonathan David Scores on Serie A Debut as Juventus Beat Parma

Date:

Canadian forward Jonathan David enjoyed a dream start to his Serie A career, scoring on his debut to guide Juventus to a 2-0 victory over Parma in their season opener on Sunday.

The 25-year-old striker, who joined the Turin giants this summer after leaving Lille on a free transfer, needed just under an hour to announce himself in Italy. His goal set the tone for Juventus’ second-half dominance, even though the Bianconeri were reduced to ten men late on. Substitute Dusan Vlahovic later sealed the victory with a well-worked second goal.

A Memorable Debut for David

David had been one of Europe’s most sought-after free agents after a prolific five-year spell at Lille, where he registered 25 goals and 12 assists in 49 appearances last season. His debut performance for Juventus was met with enthusiasm from the home fans, who gave him a standing ovation when he was replaced by Vlahovic in the 80th minute.

“It’s everything I hoped for,” David said after the match. “The atmosphere was amazing, the fans really pushed us forward. I’m happy to score on my first game, but the most important thing is helping the team win.”

The Canadian international, who is already his country’s all-time top scorer with 36 goals in 67 appearances, emphasized that he wants to contribute in every possible way. “If it’s scoring, assisting, or even defending, I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team,” he added.

Match Breakdown

Juventus endured a frustrating first half, struggling to break down a resilient Parma defense. However, after halftime, the Bianconeri raised their intensity and began creating more dangerous chances.

The breakthrough came in the 59th minute. Kenan Yildiz, one of Juve’s most promising young players, delivered a precise cross into the box, where David got ahead of his marker and calmly finished to put his side 1-0 up.

Yildiz played a key role again in Juve’s second goal. After Andrea Cambiaso was sent off in the 83rd minute for an unnecessary shove and strike on Mathias Løvik, Juventus could have been vulnerable. But instead, they launched a rapid counterattack. Yildiz sprinted down the right after being released by Vlahovic, before returning the ball for the Serbian forward to tap home, securing a 2-0 win.

Elsewhere in Serie A

The opening weekend of Serie A offered plenty of drama beyond Juventus’ victory.

  • Atalanta 2-1 Pisa: Newly promoted Pisa shocked Atalanta by taking the lead through an own goal from Isak Hien. However, under new coach Ivan Jurić, Atalanta bounced back strongly in the second half. Gianluca Scamacca, ending a 450-day goal drought, scored a fine equalizer and nearly added a second when his header hit the crossbar. Atalanta’s persistence eventually paid off as they turned the game around to secure victory in their first post-Gasperini match.
  • Como 2-0 Lazio: In one of the weekend’s biggest surprises, Como, managed by Cesc Fàbregas, stunned Lazio. Nico Paz was the star of the show, assisting the opener with a brilliant solo run and pass for Tasos Douvikas, before scoring himself with a stunning free kick. The match also made history as referee Gianluca Manganiello became the first in Serie A to announce a VAR decision live in the stadium, explaining why Taty Castellanos’ equalizer was ruled out for offside.
  • Cagliari 1-1 Fiorentina: In Sardinia, Fiorentina seemed set for an away win until Sebastiano Luperto grabbed a last-gasp equalizer for Cagliari deep into stoppage time, rescuing a point for the home side.

What This Means for Juventus

For Juventus, the win was not just about three points, but also about sending a message. Their attack, which has often been criticized for over-relying on Vlahovic, now looks sharper and more versatile with Jonathan David in the squad. His debut goal showcased his instinct, positioning, and ability to thrive in big moments.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri will hope that the David-Vlahovic partnership can blossom into one of Serie A’s most dangerous strike duos. With Yildiz also impressing as a creator, Juventus fans have reasons to be optimistic about the season ahead.
