The exclusion of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami from India’s Test squad for the upcoming series against South Africa has been interpreted as a significant strategic shift, with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar calling it a “clear indicator” that the team management is planning for the future.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad for the two-Test series, notable for the return of Bengal pacer Akash Deep and the continued absence of Shami, despite the latter’s compelling form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
Form vs. Future Planning
Shami, who represents Bengal in the domestic circuit, has made a powerful case for selection, claiming 15 wickets in his first two Ranji Trophy matches this season. This performance demonstrated both his fitness and rhythm, making his omission a topic of intense discussion among fans and pundits.
Speaking on Star Sports, Abhishek Nayar suggested that the decision points towards a deliberate generational transition. “It’s a clear indicator. It’s an indicator that India is sort of trying to look forward. Right or wrong, it’s not for us to decide,” Nayar remarked.
He acknowledged the merit in investing in younger bowlers, stating, “He’s [Akash Deep] always, to be fair to him, whenever he’s got an opportunity, he has delivered with the new ball. He’s made an impact. He’s really liked in the setup because he goes all out every time he gets an opportunity. So it’s a good investment in the future.”
A Strong, Adaptable Squad
Nayar expressed strong confidence in the selected squad, highlighting its depth and versatility. He believes the team is well-equipped to handle any conditions.
“Looking at that squad, an extremely strong squad, all facets of the game, in a lot of ways, you have surety. You can play around with different combinations. And the conditions may not matter as well because you’ve got enormous talent in that setup,” he added.
Shami last played a Test match during the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. His most recent ODI appearance was in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. His continued absence from the national side, despite proven performance, strongly suggests the selectors are ushering in a new era for India’s pace attack.
