Napoli Dethrone Champions Milan, Pulisic’s Title Defense Ends in Saudi Arabia

Date:

In a tightly contested but ultimately decisive encounter at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Napoli ended AC Milan’s reign as Supercoppa Italiana champions with a commanding 2-0 victory in the competition’s semifinal. The defeat halted what Christian Pulisic and his Rossoneri teammates hoped would be another march to silverware, following their triumph in the same tournament earlier this year.

A Game of Moments and Missed Opportunities

The match began with AC Milan, as defending champions, attempting to dictate play against a Napoli side happy to absorb pressure and strike on the counter. Milan created the first significant opening, but Christopher Nkunku failed to convert a promising chance. This profligacy proved immediately costly.

In the 39th minute, Napoli transitioned swiftly. Rasmus Hojlund, causing problems on the left flank, drove a low ball across the Milan six-yard box. Milan’s world-class goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, could only parry the dangerous cross, and the rebound fell perfectly for the alert David Neres to tap into an empty net. The goal, against the run of play, shifted the momentum entirely.

Milan emerged for the second half with renewed intent but struggled to break down a resolute Napoli defense. Any hopes of a comeback were effectively extinguished just after the hour mark. Once again, Hojlund was the protagonist, this time turning goalscorer. He finished coolly from a Leonardo Spinazzola assist in the 63rd minute, doubling Napoli’s lead and leaving Milan with a mountain to climb.

In a bid to spark a late revival, Milan coach Stefano Pioli introduced veteran playmaker Luka Modric to a warm reception from the Saudi crowd. However, the move produced too little, too late. Napoli managed the remainder of the game professionally, seeing out the 2-0 victory to advance to the final.

Key Performers: Hero and Quiet Influences

  • The MVP: Rasmus Hojlund (Napoli)
The Danish striker was the undeniable Man of the Match. His powerful run and cross created the chaotic situation for Napoli’s opener, and his composed finish for the second goal sealed the victory. His performance underscored his importance as Napoli’s other star striker, Romelu Lukaku, made his return from a long-term injury on the bench.
  • A Quiet Night: Christian Pulisic (AC Milan)
The U.S. international, who lifted this trophy with Milan last season, was kept largely in check by Napoli’s disciplined defense. While he was involved in constructing Milan’s best moves, including the early chance for Nkunku, he was unable to provide the decisive moment his team needed. His quest for a second trophy with the Rossoneri will have to wait.
  • The Big Loser: Milan’s Attacking Edge
Beyond individual performances, Milan’s collective attacking unit failed to fire. Key players like Nkunku were wasteful in crucial moments, and the team lacked the sharpness needed to break down a well-organized opponent. The missed chance just before Napoli’s opener symbolized an evening where their precision was lacking.

What’s Next

With this victory, Napoli progresses to the Supercoppa Italiana final, where they will await the winner of the second semifinal between Bologna and Inter Milan. For AC Milan and Christian Pulisic, the focus must now immediately shift back to Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, as their defense of the Italian super cup has come to a premature end. The result serves as a stark reminder of the fine margins at the highest level and the ruthlessness required in cup competitions.
