Netherlands Eases into World Cup 2026 with Lithuania Rout

Date:

The Netherlands officially booked their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, sealing top spot in Group G with a professional 4-0 victory over Lithuania. The win capped an unbeaten qualifying campaign for the three-time World Cup runners-up, who finished with 20 points, three clear of second-placed Poland.

While the result was never in doubt, the Dutch turned a narrow halftime lead into a commanding victory with a blistering three-goal burst early in the second half.

Controlled Dominance Seals Qualification

The Netherlands controlled proceedings from the start but had to wait until the 16th minute for the breakthrough. Tijjani Reijnders, recalled to the starting lineup, opened the scoring with a sharp turn and finish from a Frenkie de Jong pass.

The host’s dominance was fully realized after halftime. The floodgates opened in the 58th minute when Cody Gakpo converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review. Just two minutes later, Xavi Simons blasted a powerful shot into the net, and Donyell Malen completed the quickfire trio by finishing a swift counter-attack in the 62nd minute.

Looking Ahead to North America

The victory marks the Netherlands’ 12th appearance at the World Cup finals. For playmaker Frenkie de Jong, the real work is just beginning.

“Now the real work begins,” De Jong stated after the match. “We’re going to improve as much as possible and arrive at the World Cup in the best possible shape.”

Having navigated the qualifiers without a loss, the Dutch will now aim to translate that consistent form onto the biggest stage. The mission is clear: to finally shed their “best team never to win a World Cup” tag and claim an elusive first title in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Brief Scores:
Netherlands 4 (Reijnders 16′, Gakpo 58′ (pen), Simons 60′, Malen 62′)
