Pakistan Edges West Indies by 5 Wickets in ODI Series Opener at Tarouba

Date:

In a high-scoring epic at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Pakistan secured a dramatic 5-wicket win over West Indies, chasing down an imposing target of 281 in the opening one-day international of the series.

West Indies Set a Strong Total

Batting first under overcast skies, the West Indies posted a menacing 280 all out in their 50 overs. Their innings was anchored by Evin Lewis and Roston Chase:

  • Lewis made a quickfire 60 off 62 balls, injecting momentum early.
  • Chase added solidity at the top with a sustained 53 off 54 balls, guiding the innings through middle overs.
  • Gudakesh Motie, late in the order, smashed a blistering 31 off 18 deliveries, giving a final boost to the total.

Even as wickets fell regularly, the West Indies packed enough firepower to post an intimidating total.

Pakistan’s Chase Fueled by Debutant Heroics

Chasing 281 was always going to be tough—but Pakistan’s new talent Hasan Nawaz turned it into a showcase:

  • Making his ODI debut, Nawaz top-scored with a calm and confident 50 off 48 balls, pushing the chase across the line.
  • Anchor partnership between Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan set the platform with valuable contributions.
  • Meanwhile, Shaheen Shah Afridi delivered a crucial bowling display, finishing with 4 wickets for 51 runs, and overtook a legendary Indian pacer for the fastest strike rate in ODI history.

Pakistan completed their chase in the 49th over, winning by five wickets and gaining early momentum in the series.
