Proteas Edge Past Nepal: Tabraiz Shamsi’s Spin Secures Last-Ball Victory for South Africa

Date:

Tabraiz Shamsi’s four-wicket haul secured him the Player of the Match award in the 31st match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will be etched in memory for its heart-stopping finish. South Africa, on paper the clear favorites, were made to sweat by a spirited Nepal side at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent. Despite their slender one-run victory, the match exposed some vulnerabilities in the Proteas’ batting order.

Nepal, having won the toss, elected to field first. This decision seemed vindicated as their spin attack, led by the impressive duo of Kushal Bhurtel (4/19) and Dipendra Singh Airee (3/21), choked the flow of South African runs. Openers Reeza Hendricks (43) and Quinton de Kock (21) got starts, but wickets fell at regular intervals, leaving the Proteas batting reliant on a late cameo from Tristan Stubbs (27* off 18 balls) to reach a below-par total of 115/7.

Chasing a modest target, Nepal looked in control for much of their innings. Aasif Sheikh (42) batted with composure, stitching together a crucial partnership with Rohit Paudel (23). However, the introduction of Tabraiz Shamsi in the 18th over proved to be the turning point. The wily chinaman bowler removed both set batsmen in quick succession, triggering a Nepal collapse.

Anrich Nortje (1/27) and Ottneil Baartman (0/20) bowled with pace and control in the death overs, keeping the required run rate in check. Nepal needed just eight runs from the final over, bowled by Shamsi. The final ball saw the drama peak, with two runs needed to secure victory. Gulsan Jha, on strike, attempted a risky single but was caught short of his crease by a brilliant throw from wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock. Heinrich Klaasen, at the striker’s end, completed the run-out with a desperate dive, securing a dramatic victory for South Africa.

Shamsi’s Redemption Song

Tabraiz Shamsi, often criticized for his inconsistency, silenced his doubters with a match-winning performance. His four wickets came at a crucial juncture, derailing Nepal’s chase and putting South Africa back in the game. His trademark variations, particularly the deceptive googly, proved too much for the Nepali batsmen to handle. This performance will be a major confidence booster for Shamsi, who will be looking to carry this form into the Super Eights stage.

Nepal’s Missed Opportunity

While defeat will be a bitter pill to swallow for Nepal, there’s no denying they played with tremendous heart and skill. Their spin attack outshone their more fancied counterparts, exposing the chinks in South Africa’s batting armor. Aasif Sheikh’s composed knock and Rohit Paudel’s valuable contribution showcased the depth of batting talent in the young Nepali team.

However, their downfall came from a lack of experience in handling pressure situations. The dramatic collapse in the final overs highlighted the need for them to develop a more composed approach in tight chases. Despite the loss, Nepal can take immense pride from their performance, having pushed a top-ranked team to the brink.

A Warning Sign for South Africa?

South Africa’s win came at a cost. Their batting line-up, expected to be one of the strongest in the tournament, looked vulnerable against spin. Over-reliance on Reeza Hendricks and a lack of big scores from the middle order are areas of concern that skipper Temba Bavuma needs to address before the knockout stages. The bowling attack, while effective in the death overs, lacked penetration upfront.

This close encounter serves as a wake-up call for the Proteas. They need to find a way to score consistently against quality spin bowling and address the inconsistency in their bowling attack. While they remain unbeaten, they must improve their overall performance if they are to lift the coveted trophy.

Looking Ahead

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has thrown up another exciting contest. While South Africa secured the crucial two points, Nepal’s spirited performance has served notice that they are a team to watch out for in the future. The tournament is wide open, with several teams in contention for the title. The upcoming Super Eights stage promises to be a thrilling battle, and South Africa will need to be at their absolute best to maintain their unbeaten run.
