Tactical Timeout or Gamesmanship? Farke Accuses Man City of “Bending Rules” in Controversial Win

Date:

A dramatic 3-2 victory for Manchester City over Leeds United was overshadowed by a major controversy, with Leeds manager Daniel Farke accusing the champions of exploiting an injury stoppage to gain a tactical advantage.

The incident occurred with the score at 2-1 to City, shortly after Leeds had pulled a goal back and were building momentum. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma went down, calling for medical attention. During the stoppage, Pep Guardiola seized the opportunity to gather his entire team on the pitch and issue fresh instructions.

Farke’s Veiled Criticism

While careful not to directly accuse City of breaking any written rules, Farke’s post-match comments made his feelings abundantly clear.

“It is not the elephant in the room. Why he (Donnarumma) went down it was obvious. It is smart,” Farke told reporters. “It is within the rules, so I can’t complain.”

However, he immediately questioned the spirit of the act, adding, “If I like it? If it’s within the sense of fair play? If it should be like this? I will keep this to myself.”

He concluded with a pointed remark on sportsmanship: “If we just try to bend the rules and even do a fake injury in order to do an additional team talk, I do not like personally.”

A Rollercoaster Encounter

The controversy marred what was otherwise a thrilling match. City raced to a 2-0 lead with goals from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol. Leeds fought back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and after the disputed stoppage, they managed to equalize through Lukas Nmecha.

However, City rallied late, with Phil Foden scoring his second goal in the 91st minute to snatch a crucial three points. The win reduces the gap to league leaders Arsenal to four points, but the post-match discussion will undoubtedly focus on the ethics of the game’s pivotal moment rather than the late winner.
