UAE Dominates Japan in T20 World Cup Qualifier, Wins by 8 Wickets to Bolster Qualification Hopes

Date:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) put on a commanding performance in a crucial Super Six fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier 2025, defeating Japan (JPN) by a comprehensive margin of 8 wickets. The victory, achieved with almost eight overs to spare, gave the UAE a significant boost to their net run rate and positioned them firmly in the race for the final qualification spot for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Japan’s Innings: A Struggle for Momentum

After the UAE won the toss and elected to field first on a pitch that appeared favourable for batting, Japan’s innings never truly took off. The opening pair struggled to combat the disciplined line and length of the UAE pacers and spinners. Early wickets were the defining feature of the innings, as the top order collapsed under pressure. The Japanese batting unit could not establish any substantial partnerships, which is vital for setting a competitive total in T20 cricket.

They found themselves at a precarious position by the halfway mark, having lost key wickets. While a few batsmen, including a brief, spirited counter-attack from the middle order, tried to repair the damage, their efforts were repeatedly cut short by consistent bowling changes and sharp fielding from the Emirati side. The UAE bowlers executed their plans to perfection, mixing up their pace and utilizing the variations effectively. The disciplined bowling restricted Japan to a modest total of 116 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. The UAE’s bowlers, including key wicket-takers like Zahid Ali and Junaid Siddique, maintained pressure throughout the 20 overs, ensuring Japan could never shift into a higher gear. This final score was clearly well below par for the conditions and represented a steep challenge for the Japanese to defend against a strong UAE batting line-up.

UAE’s Explosive Chase

Chasing 117 for victory, the United Arab Emirates arrived with clear intent to finish the game quickly and maximize their net run rate. Led by an electrifying performance from opener Alishan Sharafu, the UAE launch was nothing short of explosive. Sharafu wasted no time in asserting his dominance, striking boundaries with power and precision. He single-handedly demolished the target’s required run rate, putting the game virtually out of Japan’s reach within the powerplay itself.

Sharafu scored a blistering 46 runs off just 27 deliveries, an innings decorated with powerful strokes and calculated aggression, which included four fours and several sixes. Even after the loss of the captain, Muhammad Waseem, who fell to a sharp catch off Declan Suzuki-McComb, Sharafu continued his assault. However, he eventually fell to Ibrahim Takahashi, caught in the deep by Abhishek Anand, but not before providing the perfect platform.

With the score at 95 for 2 in the 11th over, the damage was already done. The experienced duo of Mayank Kumar and Rahul Chopra then efficiently completed the chase. Chopra, in particular, was in a hurry, showcasing clean hitting to seal the victory. The UAE side reached the target of 117 in just 12.1 overs, finishing at 118 for 2, securing an emphatic 8-wicket win.

The impressive victory significantly enhanced the UAE’s net run rate, which is a crucial tie-breaker in the Super Six format where several teams are vying for the last available spot. Nepal and Oman have already secured their passage to the T20 World Cup 2026, leaving the UAE, Japan, Qatar, and Samoa to fight for the final ticket. This dominant win was a strong statement from the Emirati side, demonstrating their capability to perform under pressure and putting them in a strong position ahead of the tournament’s final round of matches. Japan, despite flashes of talent in the earlier stages of the qualifier, now face an uphill battle, needing a major upset and favorable results in other fixtures to keep their hopes mathematically alive. This fixture was a perfect example of a professional T20 chase, highlighting the depth and aggression of the UAE’s batting.
