Woltemade Fires Germany to Brink of World Cup 2026 Qualification

Date:

A second-half brace from striker Nick Woltemade guided Germany to a hard-fought 2-0 victory over a resilient Luxembourg side, leaving the four-time world champion on the cusp of automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite a surprisingly sluggish first-half performance littered with defensive errors, Germany found its rhythm after the break. Woltemade, who also scored the winner last month against Northern Ireland, broke the deadlock in the 49th minute and sealed the crucial three points with a second goal in the 69th.

The victory leaves Julian Nagelsmann’s team top of Group A with 12 points, level on points with Slovakia but ahead on goal difference.

The Decider Awaits: Germany vs. Slovakia

The stage is now set for a winner-takes-all clash on Monday. Germany will secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup with either a win or a draw against Slovakia. A victory would see them top the group, while the second-placed team must navigate a playoff round in March.

Group A Drama: Slovakia Snatches Last-Gasp Win

In the other pivotal Group A match, Slovakia secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland in a game filled with late drama and VAR controversy.

After having two second-half goals disallowed by VAR reviews, it seemed Slovakia would have to settle for a draw. However, Tomas Bobcek became the hero, bundling the ball home from a corner in the 91st minute to send the home fans into raptures.

The result confirms that both Slovakia and Northern Ireland have clinched at least a playoff spot. Northern Ireland, who had Daniel Ballard sent off late in the match, will look to rebound in their final qualifier against last-placed Luxembourg.

The Road to Canada, Mexico, and USA

With one match remaining, the equation is simple for Germany: avoid defeat on Monday and book a direct ticket to the 2026 World Cup. For football fans, this sets up a high-stakes, must-watch encounter that will define the final standings in a fiercely competitive Group A.

Stay tuned for all the updates and results from the final round of European qualifiers.
